Somers Democratic Town Chair Report
Christine Robbins

It’s been almost two years since the Somers Democratic Town Committee and the Somers Democratic Club, played a crucial role in unseating Sue Kelly and sending Democrat John Hall to Congress in her place. Since then no grass has been growing under the feet of the Town Committee. Following up on the Hall victory, we jumped right into planning for our local election. Once again we got fabulous support from the Somers Democratic Club and we achieved an historic landmark. We elected Richard Clinchy to the Somers Town Board. Richard joined our other two Democratic Councilmen, Paul Meyer and George Dieter and we now have the first Democratic majority in Somers’ modern history.

So what’s next? The political calendar rolls on and the Somers Democratic Town Committee will be gearing up to play our part in replacing this disastrous Republican administration with a thoughtful, progressive Democratic president, re-electing John Hall to Congress  and electing Democrats to the NY State Senate and Assembly.

Working with the Somers Democratic Town Committee, working as First Vice Chair of the Westchester County Democratic Executive Committee and working as your New York State Democratic Committeewoman keeps me busy, but it is a labor of love. A strong Democratic Town Committee in Somers is part of the foundation of a strong Democratic Party in Westchester County, New York State and, on the national level, in Washington, DC. These are troubled times, and we have never had a greater need for successful prosecution of the ideals that have been the bedrock of our Democratic Party.

These are troubled times. But we are going to put our shoulders to the wheel, and we will overcome.

News from Westchester County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz
Michael Kaplowitz Runs For Sixth Term

"Experience counts"- Kaplowitz

YORKTOWN, NY - Westchester County Legislator Michael B. Kaplowitz (D, I, WF-Somers) surrounded by dozens of supporters, including Chairman of the Board Bill Ryan (D,I,WF-White Plains) and Westchester County Executive Andrew J. Spano, today announced outside of Yorktown Town Hall, that he will seek reelection to the County Board of Legislators for what will be his sixth two-year term. Kaplowitz, who chairs the Legislature’s powerful Budget & Appropriations Committee, has represented the residents in the 4th District since 1998.The district includes most of Yorktown, most of Somers and all of New Castle.

"I made promises to my constituents and I've kept those promises, delivering important County services on a cost effective basis," said Kaplowitz.

According to Kaplowitz, his priorities over the next two-year term will be keeping the County in an excellent financial position and holding down property taxes, protecting our critical drinking water and preserving open space, focusing on alternative energy sources, and continuing to meet constituent's needs such as building ball fields.

" Mike Kaplowitz has made a big difference for the people of Yorktown, Somers and New Castle," said Chairman of the Board Bill Ryan. "His hard work and leadership on some of the most critical issues confronting Westchester County in recent history -like the Medical Center, Indian Point, property taxes and numerous environmental issues- has greatly benefited not only his District 4 constituents, but all residents throughout the County."

"Mike Kaplowitz is a brilliant lawmaker and does an outstanding job as the Legislature's Budget & Appropriations Committee Chairman," said Westchester County Executive Andy Spano. "I look forward to relying on him to continue his excellent work for the next two years."

HERE ARE SOME OF KAPLOWITZ "PROMISES KEPT"

As chairman of the Westchester County Legislature's Budget & Appropriations Committee, Mike Kaplowitz has:

- saved the Westchester Medical Center;
- saved taxpayers millions of dollars by cutting waste;
- reduced costs while maintaining vital County services;
- stabilized County property taxes, holding increases to less than the cost of living;
- shared sales tax revenues to hold down school and municipal taxes;
- maintained the State's only AAA Bond rating;
- supplied the necessary funding to preserve over 1000 acres of open space such as the 654-acre Angle Fly Preserve (Eagle River) and the Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown;
- granted millions of dollars to build ball fields and soccer fields for our children;
- provided our Towns with funds to protect wetlands and improve the quality of our drinking water;
- fought unfair geographic gasoline "zone pricing" and price gouging by distributors;
- provided property tax reductions and enhanced services for our veterans and seniors;
- set aside $1 million in the County's budget to participate in the State's "Purchase of Development Rights" (PDR) program - enabling us to permanently preserve precious farmland for pennies on the dollar, and
- led the fight to convince Congress to reform the "Alternative Minimum Tax" (AMT), so that middle class families do not lose their federal tax deductions.

As a member and immediate past chairman of the Legislature's Committee on the Environment & Energy, Mike Kaplowitz has:

- called for a County "Energy Czar" (which is currently in the works) that would formulate a comprehensive County Energy Policy, including conservation measures and significant use of renewables, and assist the County's municipalities in incorporating conservation measures and alternative energy sources;
- lobbied the NYS Legislature and the Public Service Commission to mandate that our power companies offer the choice of obtaining a "Smart Meter"-a home energy monitoring systems that allow customers to monitor real time usage and real time pricing, enabling them to improve their energy efficiency and lower their cost of electricity up to 30%;
- authored and passed a Resolution that mandates the County incorporate 25% renewable energy by 2010;
- cleaned up our air by sponsoring and passing legislation that mandates any diesel powered "on-road" and "non-road" vehicles operated by the County or county contractors to use ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, and prohibits diesel trucks and buses from idling for more than 3 minutes;
- held Con Edison and NYSEG responsible for massive power outages in Westchester that resulted in both companies making changes to their response plans;
- arranged for two extra dates in northern Westchester for the County "Household Chemical Clean-up Days" recycling program;
- led the fight to prevent the re-licensing of Indian Point and convert it to an alternative, non-nuclear fuel.

Mike Kaplowitz also serves on the Legislature's Committee on Public Safety & Security, where he has protected our community by:

- Providing better equipment and training for the County’s police, first responders and other emergency personnel;
- working with the District Attorney's Office to stop internet predators;
developing "211" - a regional, 7-county program that streamlines the process of obtaining vital information and direction for services such as health issues and elder care, among others;
- Enabling Westchester's municipalities to access and utilize various County programs and services, such as the STOP-DWI Patrol, along with Traffic and Criminal Software, and initiating numerous County efforts to prevent identity theft, including bringing the County's "Mobile Shredder" to Yorktown and New Castle.

"PROOF POSITIVE THAT "EXPERIENCE COUNTS"!
