The Philip Good Civic Award and the Pearl C. Scher Citizenship Award have been named in memory of individuals who devoted their life toward the betterment of both the community and government. As we do not have the means to fairly judge all students, we ask the Social Studies Department in each school to make a recommendation to us. This non-partisan award recognizes a student's excellence and accomplishments in the following areas:

-Service to our community
-Awareness of current events and issues
-Appreciation of the role in today's society

The emphasis in selecting a recipient is on the civic portion of the award. It is our intent for this to recognize civic awareness and involvement rather than be another is a series of academically oriented awards. The Somers Democratic Club presents a $200 U.S. Savings Bond to each of our civic award recipients and a $100 Savings Bond to our Citizenship award recipient.
