The Somers Democratic Club

The Somers Democratic Club has achieved many significant accomplishments. Two of our proudest achievements are that we are one of the largest civic groups in Somers with approximately 400 members and that we have played a major role in the re-establishment of two party government in Somers.

In Memorium
Peggy Rush
Margaret “Peggy” Rush
July 14, 1924 – September 2, 2007

It is with deep sadness that I post this announcement in memory of our dear Peggy Rush.

Peggy grew up in White Plains, the daughter of an Irish American police officer who was proud to walk the beat.  Her father was a fierce Democrat and that is how Peggy began her lifelong affiliation with the Democratic Party. She understood that the Democratic Party stood up for the principles and needs of the working man. Peggy married and moved to Somers with her husband John in 1959 and raised 6 children. Peggy has also been blessed with having 7 grandchildren.

For 26 years Peggy was a Kindergarten teacher’s aid in the Somers school district. During that time she influenced the lives of generations of children.

As President of the Shenorock Homeowners Assoc. Peggy gave the residents of Shenorock a voice in the community. She was successful in addressing the many needs of that Somers hamlet.

In 1985, with guidance from Westchester County Democratic Chair, Richard Weingarten, Peggy Rush along with other core local Democrats, re-formed the Somers Democratic Town Committee. She was a dedicated leader and was successful in recruiting Somers Democrats in becoming district leaders to the newly formed committee.

Peggy was the first President of the Somers Democratic Club that was formed in 1988. The club is still going strong and will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year. And, Peggy was the first honoree to receive the Somers Democratic Club’s Democrat of the Year Award.

In 1987, Peggy ran for office along with Somers Town Council candidate Howard S. Pozmanter putting Democrats on the ballot again in Somers. This began the renaissance of the Somers Democratic Party that has lead to the elections of the following candidates: Town Councilman Howard S. Pozmanter, Town Councilman Jay Hashmall, Town Councilman Andy Pecunia, Town Councilman Pearl C. Scher, Town Councilman Paul Meyer, Town Councilman George Dieter and County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz.

For decades Peggy had been the watch dog for all citizens of Somers. Given the fact that she did not drive, Peggy still found a way to attend and participate in every town board meeting, sometimes being the only resident in attendance. Although soft spoken she was always able to get her message across loud and clear.

Peggy was Chair Emeritus of the Somers Democratic Town Committee, an active district leader and a member of the Somers Democratic Club.

Most recently the Westchester County Democratic Committee presented Peggy with a Distinguished Service Award.

There will be a future announcement to memorialize Peggy’s dedication to the Democratic Party.
